Field Trips - Simple and Close to Home

Sometimes, the best trips are right around the corner. Some can be done on your own, while others need to be set up beforehand. For the latter, just call ahead and ask. Most places will be delighted to arrange an educational tour. If they only do it for 'a school group', give a shout to a couple of other homeschool families and, wah-lah, now you have 'a group'.

Grocery Store. See what the different departments (grocery, frozen food, general merchandise, cashiers, etc.) actually do. Find out why stock has to be rotated, who sets the prices, how a cake decorating airbrush works, and how many different countries ship in fruits and vegetables for that one produce department.

Fields and Parks. Identify the various wildflowers in the spring, or the birds in the winter. Which ones are native, and which are from elsewhere? Why do certain birds stay in the winter, while others migrate? Do you see tracks on the ground? Are those from coyote? Deer, maybe? Prairie dogs? Does the park need a bench to sit on? Can you make a suet feeder for the hungry birds? Call the city park department and find out!

Pet Stores and Veterinarians. What's the difference between fresh water and tropical fish? How does one become a groomer? What tools do they use? How on earth do you bathe a cat? Has your child (or you, for that matter) witnessed the birthing of puppies or kittens or guinea pigs? How big are fleas? How much does a horse eat in a day? Do pigs really make good house pets?
